Mark from NIWA

We were really lucky to have Mark who is a marine biologist from NIWA visit us today.  NIWA looks at sustainability in the ocean. He used to look after the Colossal Squid at Te Papa!

We learned that there were 1000 Maui's Dolphin in the 1970s but once New Zealand starting trawl fishing, that number dropped and dropped until there was only 55!  We also learned about all the deep sea creatures that are also hurt by the trawlers nets being dragged on the ocean floor.  Here are some amazing creatures that live on New Zealand's ocean floor:

We found out lots of ways to make sure we have a more sustainable ocean environment, which will help protect the Maui's Dolphin, like not using plastic bags, eating non-native sealife (like salmon), adopting a beach or a dolphin and using sustainable power like solar and wind.

As we were leaving, Mark showed us the beak of a Colossal Squid.  Wow!
