Kahurangi

A celebration of Matariki.

With Matariki comes the harvest. This item showed us the story of harvest and the tools that are used during that time.

The next item was about 7 beautiful fishes. Te Ika o Matariki. Tane Mahuta rescued the 7 fishes and threw them to the safety of the heavens. Each fish represents a season.

We learnt a waiata about Te Ika o Matariki.

We also learnt two action games - Tu Tamara and Paki.

During Matariki we also honour our ancestors. We heard a song that is a tribute to our loved ones.

The next song honoured a Taonga - poi. When poi are used in their long form, the patterns represent the flight of our native birds. The sounds made by short poi signify the beating of Papatuanuku's heart.

Enrichment

Today was the second day of sewing for enrichment. We are having a fabulous time learning some basic stitches and creating simple patterns.

The knee bone's connected to the thigh bone!

Today we went on another adventure in the library. This time we looked at the Health and Human Bosy section.
Mrs Davidson read us a story about keeping clean and we also looked at other books in that section.

Our library time was interrupted by an earthquake drill. When we heard the bell going we tucked ourselves under the tables and in the doorway.
We then went outside and Mrs Linehan took the roll so that she knew everyone was there and safe.

What a great day!!

Our trip into space!

Today Mrs. Davison took Tuatara class on a trip into space. We held hands in a line so that no-one flew away, and started our adventure. She led the way with her glow lamp.

After taking off, we had to travel around by using huge steps because there wasn't much gravity!

We finally landed and took our seats in the space pod. There were flashing lights and a planet to look at.

We learnt that when we want to find a book about space, we go to the 520 - 523 shelf in the non-fiction section.

We explored books about space...

...and talked about some of the facts we already know.
Thanks for our trip!!

Our busy week so far!

This week we have continued our inquiry by talking and writing about our families.

We have been writing recounts about a special family memory, and have discovered that sharing our stories with a friend can really help. Friends can offer ideas about how we can make our stories better!

We have also been creating our family trees and they are looking AWESOME!! Thank you for helping the children gather the information.
